Process and Timeline

From DNA to antigens

When a blood sample is received, DNA is extracted, amplified and submitted for sequencing. The sequencing results are quality controlled. Genotype data is then analysed using an automated antigen prediction pipeline and a comprehensive antigen status report is produced. Reports are issued to the referring clinician. This test is not available until 2018 therefore turnaround times are not as yet established.

Scientific vigilance

The Blood Transfusion Genomics platform will be regularly re-assessed and relevant new genes involved in Red Cell, Platelet and Neutrophil antigens will be added.
